We are Pomona Unified School District, Child Development, Resource and Referral program at Pomona Unified School District's Child Development program. We support early learning across Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. Within our department, our Resource and Referral program connects families to quality child care and essential resources. The program also strengthens providers through training coaching and ongoing support that helps them grow with confidence. To better understand this impact, we spoke with childcare providers about their journeys before the program, the support they received, and the difference it continues to make in their work with children. Here are their stories. Tell us about yourself. Hi, my name is Deidra Ivory. I am the owner of Ivory Family Child Care. I have been in business for 21 years. Hi, my name is Paola Sanchez my business is Sanchez Family Child Care. I've been a provider for the 16 years. Before you connected with the resource and referral program, what was your experience like as a child care provider? Before I connected with Resource and Referral, it was a challenge, a real challenge. I I lived in LA before, I moved out here, I didn't know anyone and trying to get this business going, it was a nightmare. I was going door to door with flyers. I was going to parks. I was going to schools wherever I could go. I tried to connect with people, but it seemed like no one would tell you anything. It was like they were just concerned about their business. If you ask them a question, they were vague. And then, I ran into someone and they told me about the Pomona Unified School District, and they said that's your Resource and Referral. Why don't you go down there? Before I started with your program, I was feeling frustrated, worried to start a business on my own. I was not familiar with licensing requirements, I needed ideas for age appropriate activities. How has that support made a difference in your work and your program? Now that I have the support of the referral system, families are coming to me now and that's been wonderful. Plus, I have the word of mouth because once parents come here, they see what I have to offer, and the children have fun and the parents see that the child is doing more than just playing. There they're also learning now. I have more confidence in my business because of the the networking and the training, the workshops, and I enjoy what I do. I feel good about myself because I have more to offer now and I have more to offer the children and my business. is successful because of the trainings. Your program helped me a lot. The program gave me resources, educational materials, trainings and workshops. Referrals to communicate services. A chance to connect with other providers. Now, I create age appropriate learning experiences. My classroom is more organized. My children are more engaged, independent, and successful. I am more confident. What would you say to other providers or families who are considering the program? They have so much to offer you. If you if you're afraid or you don't know which way to go like I did in the beginning, I recommend the Resource and Referral system because once you go there, there's plenty of training. All you have to do is be willing to take this step. I would tell anyone that's in this business, attend the classes, business classes because I learned things like the difference between a handbook and my contract. If you want to take a person to court, the handbook doesn't work. It's your contract. There was a workshop called Trauma (Informed Care). I would suggest every daycare provider attend those classes because those classes will help you understand the children that you're working with. When you see a child bouncing off the wall or melting down, you realize there's something going on here. And, then you can kind of understand what's going on with the child, when you have knowledge of what's happening with the child. I also learned from those trainings about culture, diversity, so I can understand the children I'm working with. I learned their culture, they learned my culture. The diversity... wonderful! I learned a lot. This program will help you. The quality of your program will improve. These stories are a reminder that no provider has to do it alone.
