All Our Kin - Business Series Program
Celebrating Growth and New Beginnings
Congratulations to the recent graduates of the Business Series program, hosted by the PUSD Child Development, Resource & Referral Department. This 10-week training, led by All Our Kin, equipped English-speaking family child care providers with essential skills to grow their businesses and enhance the care they offer. Through a mix of in-person and online sessions, participants gained valuable knowledge on key topics such as goal setting, marketing, contracts, risk management, time-space percentage, financial management, and recordkeeping—all aimed at improving business operations and providing high-quality child care.
A Memorable Activity: The Ball of Yarn
One of the highlights of the training was an emotionally charged group activity known as the "Ball of Yarn." Designed to symbolize unity and connection, this exercise had participants form a circle and share one thing they learned or accomplished during the program. As each person shared their insight, they passed the ball of yarn to the next participant, creating a tangible web of connections among the group. Many participants shared deep personal reflections on how the training had impacted their business practices, and the bonds formed during the program were palpable. By the end of the exercise, the group had not only woven a physical circle of yarn, but also forged meaningful friendships and professional networks that will continue to support them long after the training ended.
Insights from a Graduate
Libier, a seasoned child care provider with 22 years of experience, shared her thoughts on the program:
"Even though I’ve been in the business for many years, this training was a wake-up call. It helped me view my child care business from a different perspective. The sessions with Ana and Alida provided invaluable knowledge on everything from contracts and policies to understanding time-space percentages. This training made me realize that we are not just babysitters—we are providing an essential service to children and families, offering an in-home environment that’s just as valuable as a center-based one. I would highly recommend this training to anyone running a daycare business."
Libier's experience reflects the profound impact the program has on providers, whether they are just starting out or looking to enhance their established businesses.
